Red Hawks baseball wins series finale against Eagles

HICKORY, N.C. — The Catawba Valley Community College baseball team closed out its weekend conference series against Wake Tech on Sunday with a 11-3 victory at Henkel-Alley Field at the Hickory American Legion Fairgrounds.

Offensively, right fielder Cone Cunningham led the Red Hawks (9-12, 5-4) by going 2-for-3 at the plate with three runs scored, two RBI and a home run. Shortstop Juan Moreno also went 2-for-3 at the plate with three runs and two RBI.

Wake Tech led 2-1 through four complete innings, but Catawba Valley took command of the game by scoring six runs total in the fifth and sixth innings to pull ahead for good in the Region 10 contest.

Cunningham's home run started the rally in the fifth inning, and he also drove in another run on a single during the sixth inning.

Third baseman Jackie Jimenez and second baseman Kyle Raynor each recorded an RBI double during the rally. Jimenez's double drove in one run in the fifth, while Raynor's brought home Moreno and Cunningham in the sixth.

On the mound, Red Hawk starter Bryson Hammer improved to 2-1 on the season. He allowed three hits, one earned run, three walks and struck out eight batters.

The Catawba Valley Community College baseball team returns to action on Wednesday for its "Battle with the Bridge" rivalry game against Caldwell First pitch is set for 6 p.m. in Hudson, N.C.
