Hall’s gem lifts Red Hawks to win over Titans in series finale

HICKORY, N.C. — Behind a two-hit shutout from sophomore pitcher Matthew Hall, the Catawba Valley Community College baseball team earned a 9-0 conference victory against Guilford Tech during Sunday's series finale at Henkel-Alley Field.

Catawba Valley started the game's scoring during the third inning behind an RBI single from center fielder Carter Lindsay and a two-run single by first baseman Sam Stowe to make it a 3-0 CVCC lead.

After allowing a two-out single in the first inning, Hall retired seven-straight Guilford Tech batters before surrendering his second and final hit of the game to lead off the fourth inning.

The Titans loading the bases during the fourth with just one out, but Hall was able to work through the trouble to force a strike out and ground out to end the inning.

Jake Gorman added to the Red Hawk lead in the fourth inning, bringing home teammate Eli Harpalani on a fielder's choice to make it 4-0 CVCC.

The Red Hawks added three more runs in the fifth inning on an RBI single by catcher Zack Fike and an RBI ground out by shortstop J.R. Dippold bringing the Catawba Valley lead to 7-0.

Hall carried the momentum from dodging a bases-loaded fourth inning by retiring nine of the final 11 Guilford Tech batters.

A two-run homer by Stowe in the bottom of the sixth inning pushed the Red Hawks into position to win by run rule, and Hall finished the game in the seventh inning by retiring three of the four batters he faced to earn his fourth win of the spring.

The Catawba Valley Community College baseball team returns to action on Wednesday for a road conference contest against Cleveland Community College. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. at Keeter Stadium in Shelby.
