Late free throw sinks Red Hawks in 104-103 loss

HUDSON, N.C. — Caron Corpening made 1-of-2 free throws with 4.3 seconds remaining, lifting the Caldwell Community College & Technical Institute men's basketball team to a thrilling 104-103 victory against visiting Catawba Valley Community College on Wednesday night.

Corpening drew a foul on contact from CVCC's Steve Ruszala going to the basket in the game's closing moments, and the freshman from Hickory, N.C. made the second of two free throws for the eventual game-winning point.

CVCC (1-2) attempted to drive the length of the court and put up a shot to win the game after the go-ahead free throw, but the Red Hawks' Tyrell Oglesby lost control of the ball to end the game.

It was back and forth between the Red Hawks and Cobras for most of the game with CCC&TI leading 47-45 at halftime. The largest lead by either team in the entire contest was just eight points.

Oglesby led the charge for Catawba Valley in Wednesday's game, scoring a team-high 23 points, while teammate Myles Williams added 20 points. Both players made four 3-point baskets in the contest.

Trevor Willis paced the Cobras (2-1) in victory, scoring 18 points — all of which came from behind the 3-point line.

CVCC is back in action on Tuesday when it hosts Lees-McRae at 7 p.m. at the Tarlton Complex.
