Red Hawks top Cougars, set record for best start

HICKORY, N.C. — The Catawba Valley Community College men's basketball team stretched its winning streak to six games with an 89-74 victory against Central Carolina Community College on Friday during the first day of the CVCC Christmas Classic.

Isayah Johnson scored 18 points to lead the Red Hawks, who set a new program record for best start to a season (9-1).

CVCC powered ahead of the Cougars at halftime, leading 48-27. Sophomore forward Jordan Powell scored 11 of his 13 points to help the Red Hawks gain the early advantage.

Despite its halftime lead, Catawba Valley struggled early in the second half, but Johnson powered his team down the stretch, scoring 14 of his 18 points during the half en route to the victory.

Rodney Alston scored a game-high 23 points, including making five 3-pointers, to lead Central Carolina (9-5).

The CVCC men's basketball tournament finishes play at the CVCC Christmas Classic with its final home game of 2018 on Saturday. The Red Hawks face Johnston Community College at 3 p.m.
