Red Hawks’ Powell named NJCAA Player of the Week

HICKORY, N.C. — After helping the Catawba Valley Community College men's basketball team reach historic heights, Jordan Powell was honored by the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) on Wednesday.

The 6-foot-7 Red Hawk forward was named the NJCAA's Division II Player of the Week for games played Dec. 10-16, 2018.

"This is a great honor, and I'm proud of my teammates for trusting me and working hard with me to me achieve this," Powell said. "This isn't for just me. It's more than that. It's for our team and for our school."

A sophomore transfer from Hartford, Conn., Powell averaged 18.0 points and 12.5 rebounds per game last week, helping the Red Hawks defeated Central Carolina Community College (89-74) and Johnston Community College (86-70).

Powell has been pivotal in helping the CVCC men's basketball start a record-setting 10-1 this season and also helping the program earn a national ranking for the first time ever. He currently leads the Red Hawks in rebounds per game (8.8) and field goal percentage (70.1) and ranks second in points per game (15.2).

The CVCC men's basketball team returns to the court on Friday, Jan. 4, 2019 at home in another conference game — this time against Bryant & Stratton (Va.). Game time is set for  6 p.m.
