Titans top Red Hawks as Leach sets career high

JAMESTOWN, N.C. — The Catawba Valley Community College men's basketball team dropped its second-straight conference road game on Wednesday afternoon, falling 88-85 to Guilford Tech at the Mary Perry Ragsdale Family YMCA.

Freshman guard Malik Leach scored a career-high 20 points, leading the Red Hawks (16-7, 8-6 in Region X) in the contest.

Leach was one of five CVCC players to reach double figures in scoring in Wednesday's game, including Jordan Powell (15 points), Jonathan McFall (13), Isayah Johnson (12) and Jahleer Black (10).

Catawba Valley fought back from a slow start on Wednesday, and despite trailing Guilford Tech 30-23 with four minutes left in the first half, the Red Hawks pulled within 39-38 by the halftime buzzer. Johnson paced CVCC in the first half with 11 points, while McFall added nine points.

In a back-and-forth second half, the Red Hawks would receive 13 points apiece from Leach and Powell, but despite that effort would fall by three points to the Titans (15-4, 9-3).

The CVCC men's basketball team returns to the court on Saturday when it faces off with conference opponent Bryant & Stratton (Va.). Tip off between the Red Hawks and Bobcats is set for 3 p.m. in Virginia Beach, Va.
