Red Hawks’ Powell, Johnson are named All-Region X

HICKORY, N.C. — After a record-setting season, two members of the Catawba Valley Community College men's basketball team have received individual honors from Region X.

Sophomore forwards Jordan Powell and Isayah Johnson have both been selected as All-Region X.

Powell was chosen to the first team, while Johnson was named honorable mention.

"I am very happy and proud of Jordan for being named first team All-Region and Isayah for being named honorable mention. Both are very deserving," said CVCC head men's basketball coach Bryan Garmroth. "They worked hard all year, and both were great leaders and strong contributors for our team this season. As with all our sophomores, we will miss them next year."

Powell finished as the team leader for CVCC in multiple offensive categories, including 14.9 points per game, 9.7 rebounds per game and a 66 percent field goal percentage.

His career high in scoring came on Jan. 6, 2019 when he logged 32 points against rival Pitt. With that scoring output, he became just the fifth CVCC men's basketball player in the past eight seasons to record 30 or more points in a game.

A native of Hartford, Conn., the 6-foot-7 Powell scored in double digits 23 times in 31 games, recording double doubles in 12 of those contests.

A Charlotte native, Johnson finished second for the Red Hawks in scoring with 11.3 points per game, and he logged the third-most rebounds per game this season (5.4).

The former West Charlotte High School product also ranked second for Catawba Valley in field goal percentage (59.9) just behind Powell.

A Mars Hill commit, the 6-foot-7 Johnson finished his two-year career at CVCC with 683 points and 373 rebounds — which are the third-most in a Red Hawk career. His 55 blocked shots, 275 total field goals and 273 2-point field goals are the most by any CVCC men's basketball player in a career.

Behind both Powell and Johnson, the Red Hawks finished their 2018-19 season with a 22-9 record and 13-7 mark in conference games. The 22 wins are the second most in a season in program history.
