Second half collapse dooms Red Hawks in 92-81 loss

LOUISBURG, N.C. — The Catawba Valley Community College men's basketball team dropped its second-straight road contest in difficult fashion on Saturday afternoon, falling 92-81 against Louisburg at the Roger Taylor Center.

Sophomore Sal-Bey Young led the Red Hawks (12-8, 7-6 in Region 10), scoring a season-high 19 points. Fellow sophomores Jonathan McFall (17 points) and Jahleer Black (11) and freshman Donovan Evans (11) also reached double figures in scoring for CVCC.

Young — a 6-foot-3 forward from Garner, N.C. — scored 10 of his points during the first half, helping Catawba Valley gain a 40-36 halftime lead.

Despite being down by four points at the break, the Hurricanes (11-8, 7-5 in Region 10) erupted in the second half, making five 3-pointers and 17-of-21 free throws during the half to pull away for the 11-point victory in conference play.

The CVCC men's basketball team will attempt to bounce back when it returns to action on Monday for the first of three home conference games this week against Vance-Granville.

Tip off between the Red Hawks and Vanguards is set for 7 p.m. at the Tarlton Complex.
