Red Hawks hold off Hurricanes on ‘Sophomore Day’

HICKORY, N.C. — The Catawba Valley Community College men's basketball team celebrated the careers of its six sophomores in style on Saturday, holding off Louisburg for the 94-81 conference victory at the Tarlton Complex.

The win secures an unbeaten home record in Region 10 play for CVCC — the first time the Red Hawks have ever went perfect at home since moving to Division II.

Sophomores Sal-Bey Young and Jonathan McFall led CVCC (19-8, 14-6 in Region 10) in Saturday's game with 18 points each.

Overall, all six Red Hawk sophomores — including Jahleer Black, Byron Sanders, Jeremiah Keith and Zach De La Cruz — combined to score 76 of the 94 points in Saturday's conference win.

Catawba Valley and Louisburg battled tightly throughout Saturday's game with the Red Hawks gaining a 39-37 halftime lead. Young and McFall led the way at halftime for CVCC with eight points apiece.

Pushing its lead to as many as 10 points in the second half, the Red Hawks could not shake the Hurricanes, who rallied from down double digits to stay within four points of the lead throughout most of the second half.

However, a key three-point play by Young with 1:58 remaining helped push CVCC's lead to 84-77 and also fouled out Louisburg's Antonio Patterson in the process.

That key play and 10 made free throws down the stretch allowed the Red Hawks to earn the win and improve their home record to 17-1 this winter.

The CVCC men's basketball team concludes its regular season with two road games — the first of which takes place on Wednesday at Patrick Henry.

Tip off between the Red Hawks and Patriots in Martinsville, Va. is set for 7 p.m.
