Red Hawks’ season ends in semifinal loss to ‘Canes

MARTINSVILLE, Va. — The Catawba Valley Community College women's basketball team's season came to an end on Friday at the hands of Louisburg during the semifinals of the Region 10 tournament held at Stone Hall on the campus of Patrick Henry Community College.

The Red Hawks finish their 2019-20 season with a 22-2 overall record.

"Our hearts are broken today, but we know that the Good Lord will mend them back together," said CVCC head women's basketball coach Tisha England. "There were a lot challenges this year, but also a lot of triumphs. We challenged ourselves and succeeded in many areas. I saw much growth in our players. We came up short, but I'm proud of the Lady Red Hawks. We are warriors. We withheld nothing. We are CVCC. I want to thank everyone for their support."

Battling closely throughout the first half, Catawba Valley and Louisburg traded the lead back and forth. The Hurricanes led 23-18 after the first quarter before the Red Hawks gained a 36-30 lead at halftime.

Ultimately, though, it was third-quarter foul trouble and hot 3-point shooting helped propel Louisburg into the lead late in the game. Region Player of the Year Alliyah Chaplin and second-team All-Region performer Aniya Taylor both earned their fourth fouls, which hindered Catawba Valley offensively.

Chaplin and Taylor returned with five minutes left in the fourth quarter, but the Red Hawks could not overcome the six-point deficit built in the third quarter.

Chaplin led CVCC with 21 points and eight rebounds, while Tazah Hardin and Taylor both reached double figures in scoring with 16 and 14 points, respectively.

Friday's game was the final six Red Hawk sophomores, including Alliyah Chaplin, Aniya Taylor, Tazah Hardin, Deja Ross, Diamond Steward and Ivy Eller.
