Shawn Johnson enters his first year as the head men's basketball coach at Catawba Valley Community College for the 2023-24 season.

After stepping in this past season, Johnson helped guide the Red Hawks to a Region 10 semifinal tournament appearance and finish the year on a 16-9 run.  The Red Hawks posted a 20-12 record for only the fourth 20 win season in program history.  During his previous six seasons as an assistant with the Red Hawks, Johnson has been a part of 105 victories. He's also helped 25 of CVCC men's basketball players move on to four-year schools, and coached over 15 players named to the All-Region team.

Prior to arriving at CVCC, Johnson spent eight years as the boy's basketball coach at Hickory High School where he compiled a record of 183-51. Each of his Red Tornado teams also made the 3A state playoffs, including reaching the 3A state final in 2011-12.

Johnson was an assistant varsity basketball coach for five seasons at West Caldwell. He helped the Warriors win a 2A West Region championship during the 1998-99 season en route to an appearance in the 2A state championship game.

Before his coaching career, Johnson played basketball and football at Lenoir-Rhyne College.  During the 1996-97 season he led the basketball team in assists per game with 5.2 (141) and during the 1995 season as the Quarterback he led the team in passing yards and overall offense.  In high school Johnson was a standout point guard Eden Morehead where he helped lead the team to a state championship title in 1992.
