Red Hawks split doubleheader with No. 14 Stingers

FLORENCE, S.C. — The Catawba Valley Community College softball team earned a split during its road conference division doubleheader on Friday against 14th-ranked Florence Darlington.

With the results of the games, the Red Hawks' record now stands at 9-5 overall ad 3-1 in Region 10 West Division play.

Game one: Catawba Valley 16, No. 14 Florence-Darlington 7 (six innings)

The Red Hawks connected on a season-high five home runs, earning the run-rule victory in game one against the Stingers.

Catcher Ashlyn Parsons led Catawba Valley by going 3-for-3 at the plate with two home runs and five RBI.

Shortstop Paige Norton, pitcher Chesney Millsaps and left fielder Katie Camp also hit one home each in the contest for the Red Hawks, who scored in every inning of the contest.

Millsaps earned her third win of the season on the mound. She allowed 10 hits, three earned runs, two walks and struck out two batters in 3.1 innings.

Game two: No. 14 Florence Darlington 3, Catawba Valley 2

The Stingers capitalized on two first-inning runs and scored the go-ahead run in the fifth inning to defeat the Red Hawks in game two of the set on Friday.

Pitcher Payton Goble led Catawba Valley in the contest with two RBI — both of which came during the top of the third inning. Third baseman Kelsea Dejarnette recorded a double — part of six hits for CVCC offensively.


The Red Hawks return to action on Saturday for another conference division road doubleheader against Cleveland Community College in Shelby, N.C. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
