MORRISTOWN, Tenn. — The Catawba Valley Community College softball team lost a pair of road games on Wednesday afternoon to Division I Walters State.

With the results of Wedesday's games, the Red Hawks' record now stands at 10-7 overall.

Game one: DI Walters State 15, Catawba Valley 3

The Senators used 13 hits, including a second-inning grand slam by right fielder Jessica Odom, to defeat the Red Hawks in five innings in game one of the set on Wednesday.

Catawba Valley third baseman Kelsea Dejarnette gave her team an early 3-0 lead with a three-run home run in the first inning.

However, Odom's grand slam pulled Walters State ahead for good, and the Senators went on to score 10 runs during the second inning to end any threat of a comeback.

Walters State added four more runs to its advantage in the third inning and one in the fourth inning to seal its 12th victory of the season.

Starting pitcher Chesney Millsaps, right fielder Zoe Dalton and second baseman Hayley Morrow all tallied one hit apiece in the game for the Red Hawks.

On the mound, Millsaps took the loss. She gave up six hits, six earned runs and three walks in her lone inning, dropping her record to 4-3 on the season.

Game two: DI Walters State 15, Catawba Valley 2

Scoring eight runs in the first inning, the Senators completed the doubleheader sweep with a second five-inning victory against the Red Hawks in game two of the set on Wednesday.

Walters State capitalized on nine first-inning hits to plate eight runs and take its early 8-0 lead. Shortstop Kaitlyn Harper led the charge with a two-run home run in the inning, while Newport, Miller and Odom all recorded RBI singles.

A two-run error in left field helped Walters State add three more runs to its lead in the second inning, making it an 11-0 lead for the home team through two complete.

Catawba Valley starting pitcher Payton Goble broke up the shutout in the top of the third inning, scoring catcher Ashlyn Parsons and shortstop Paige Norton on a two-RBI double.

Parsons and Norton both tallied a team-high two hits in the contest.

The Senators closed out the contest by scoring two runs in the third and fourth innings, and starting pitcher Kenna Kap went the distance, retiring six of the final seven batters she faced to close out Walters State's 13-run victory.

Goble took the loss on the mound. She allowed nine hits, eight earned runs and two walks. She falls to 2-4 on the mound this season.

The Catawba Valley Community College softball team returns to action on Thursday for a road doubleheader against the Belmont Abbey JV team. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. in Belmont, N.C.
