Red Hawks’ Lail named NJCAA Pitcher of the Week

HICKORY, N.C. — Catawba Valley Community College softball player Mayson Lail has been named the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division II Pitcher of the Week.

The NJCAA announced Lail's honor on social media on Wednesday. This is the second time in Lail's career that she's earned an NJCAA weekly honor and only the third NJCAA weekly honor in Red Hawk softball program history.

A right-handed pitcher from Conover, Lail finished last week with two wins in three appearances on the mound. She allowed just two earned runs over 17 innings pitched.

The St. Stephens alumnus struck out 28 batters and allowed only one walk in three games against Division I Spartanburg Methodist and Region 10 rival Wake Tech.

Lail is currently 9-1 on the season with six complete games, 82 strikeouts and a 1.46 ERA.

Currently on a 12-game winning streak, the 20th-ranked Catawba Valley Community College softball team returns to the diamond on Tuesday for the start of a pivotal conference series against No. 14 Bryant & Stratton.

First pitch for Tuesday's Region 10 doubleheader between the Red Hawks and Bobcats is set for noon at Stanford Park.
