Red Hawks fall to Bobcats in final game of 2018

HICKORY, N.C. — The Catawba Valley Community College women's basketball team dropped a close 70-63 conference game against Bryant & Stratton on Sunday afternoon at the Tarlton Complex.

With the loss, the Red Hawks drop to 6-2 overall and 2-2 in Region X play.

Sophomore Sherry Johnson powered CVCC in the contest with 17 points and 19 rebounds — her fifth double-double this season — while freshman Aniya Taylor added 16 points.

After a back-and-forth first half that saw the Red Hawks lead by as many as 10 points, Catawba Valley held a 30-29 advantage at halftime against Bryant & Stratton.

The Bobcats (10-0, 7-0 in Region X) responded quickly in the third quarter, capitalizing on foul trouble by CVCC forward Zharia Brown to go on an 8-0 run and into the lead for good in the game.

Taylor attempted to keep the Red Hawks in the game, scoring 14 of her 16 points during the second half, but CVCC made just 24 of its 64 field goal attempts (37.5 percent) and was unable to fight back from its deficit.

Serenity Turnbull and Tyriyanna Owens both scored 13 points to lead the Bobcats in the victory.

The next CVCC women's basketball game takes place on Jan. 2, 2019 in a road make-up contest against Division I Walters State. Tip off for that contest in Morristown, Tenn. is set for 5:30 p.m.
