Red Hawks hold off Sea Devils for 73-60 victory

HICKORY, N.C. — The Catawba Valley Community College women's basketball team battled back from some third quarter adversity to seize a 73-60 conference victory against rival Cape Fear at the Tarlton Complex on Saturday afternoon.

Sherry Johnson led the Red Hawks (7-3, 3-2) with 21 points and seven rebounds. Teammates Milequa Eason (15 points), Zharia Brown (14 points) and Danielle Rainey (13 points) also reached double figures in scoring for CVCC.

Brown also recorded her fifth double double of the season with a team-high 11 rebounds.

After taking a 39-34 lead at halftime, the Red Hawks saw that advantage evaporate in the third quarter behind an 11-2 run by the Sea Devils (10-3, 7-2).

However, Catawba Valley would respond to regain a six-point lead by the end of the third quarter, 53-47.

Johnson scored nine points in the fourth quarter and Eason added five points, helping the Red Hawks stretch their lead into double digits on the way to their third Region X win of the season.

Tracey Kemp led Cape Fear with 15 points and Ny Langley added 14 points.

The CVCC women's basketball team returns to action on Tuesday for a rare matinee game against Division I Walters State. Tip off between the Red Hawks and Senators is set for 2 p.m. in the Tarlton Complex.
