HICKORY, N.C. — The Catawba Valley Community College women's basketball team won its third-straight Region X game on Sunday afternoon, knocking off visiting Lenoir Community College 71-39 at the Tarlton Complex.
Sophomore forward Sherry Johnson led the Red Hawks (9-4, 5-2 in Region 10) with 18 points and seven rebounds while freshman guard Aniya Taylor added 13 points and five rebounds off the bench.
After a sluggish start to the game, CVCC built on a four-point first quarter lead by outscoring Lenoir 18-7 in the second quarter, gaining a 31-16 advantage at halftime.
The Red Hawks remained steady in the third and fourth quarters, making 29-of-57 shots form the field (50.9 percent) including 4-of-9 shots from 3-point range (44.4 percent), to earn the 32-point conference victory at home.
The CVCC women's basketball team returns to action on Thursday with a road conference game against Patrick Henry. Tip off between the Red Hawks and Patriots in Martinsville, Va. is set for 5 p.m.
