Johnson, Eller have career days in 103-58 CVCC win

HICKORY, N.C. — The 20th-ranked Catawba Valley Community College women's basketball team won its ninth-straight game on Tuesday afternoon, pummeling visiting Patrick Henry 103-58 at the Tarlton Complex.

Sophomore forward Sherry Johnson set a new career high with 32 points, while freshman guard Ivy Eller also etched a new career high in scoring with 21 points.

CVCC's Tazah Hardin also tied her career high with 12 points, and freshman Deja Ross recorded a new career high with six points.

Despite only scoring two points during the game's first four minutes, the Red Hawks (17-3) outscored the Patriots 28-3 during the final six minutes of the first quarter to take an early 30-6 lead.

Johnson would go on to score 17 first-half points, helping Catawba Valley build a 51-20 halftime lead against the Patriots (3-12).

In a balanced second half by both teams, Patrick Henry scored 19 points apiece in each quarter during the second half, but CVCC maintained its double-digit lead by scoring 26 points in each of the third and fourth quarters on its way to a 45-point victory.

Zharia Brown and Aniya Taylor also reached double figures in scoring for Catawba Valley with 14 and 11 points, respectively.

Keme Lester led the Patriots with 24 points, while Vernicia Glass added 17 points.

The CVCC women's basketball team returns to action on Saturday for the first of two road conference games in two days.

The Red Hawks face off with Wake Tech in Raleigh, N.C. at 2 p.m. Saturday before traveling to Kinston, N.C. on Sunday for a 2 p.m. contest against Lenoir Community College.
