HICKORY, N.C. — The 14th-ranked Catawba Valley Community College women's basketball team recorded its 12th-straight win on Friday, edging Guilford Tech 71-63 at the Tarlton Complex.

With its win, the Red Hawks improve to 20-3 overall and 14-1 in Region X. This is the fifth time in the program's 10-year history that CVCC has eclipsed the 20-win plateau.

Red Hawks sophomore forward Sherry Johnson recorded her 15th double double this season in the contest, scoring 21 points and grabbing 15 rebounds.

Johnson scored 18 first-half points, helping power Catawba Valley out to a 43-34 halftime lead against the Titans.

The Red Hawks led by as many as 22 points in Friday's conference contest, using an 11-0 run to take a 57-35 lead midway through the third quarter.

However, the Titans rallied late, answering with a 12-4 run to start the fourth quarter to pull within 64-57 with nine minutes, 54 seconds remaining.

CVCC overcame a 10-for-28 (35.7 percent) shooting performance during the second half and made key free throws down the stretch, slipping past Guilford Tech to extend its winning streak to 12 games — the second-longest winning streak in program history.
