Red Hawks win 13th in a row, surge into first place

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — In a battle between two teams in Region X, the 14th-ranked Catawba Valley Community College women's basketball team won its 13th straight game on Sunday, defeating Bryant & Stratton College 60-46 at Maury High School.

Freshman Ivy Eller scored a team-high 17 points to lead the Red Hawks (21-3, 15-1 in Region X), who take sole possession of first place in the conference standings with the win. Sophomore forward Sherry Johnson added 14 points for CVCC.

The Bobcats (20-4, 14-2) led during the entire first half, taking a 14-11 lead after the first quarter before seizing a 31-27 halftime advantage.

Tiara Williams scored a game-high 18 points for Bryant & Stratton — 12 of those coming in the first half.

Catawba Valley surged ahead for good in the second half, outscoring the Bobcats 33-15 in the half, including 17-10 in the third quarter.

Eller spearheaded the second-half charge for CVCC with 11 points, while Johnson wasn't far behind with 10 points in the half.

Leading 44-41 entering the fourth quarter, Catawba Valley pulled away late by outscoring Bryant & Stratton 16-5 during the final stanza en route to its 15th conference win.

Attempting to extend its winning streak to 14 games, the Catawba Valley Community College women's basketball team returns to the court on Thursday night for their annual "Sophomore Night" against Louisburg College.

Tip off between Red Hawks and Hurricanes is set for 6 p.m.
