Red Hawks’ win streak snapped by the Sea Devils

WILMINGTON, N.C. — The 11th-ranked Catawba Valley Community College had its 15-game winning streak snapped on Saturday afternoon at the hands of 20th-ranked Cape Fear in an 83-61 defeat at the Schwartz Center.

Sherry Johnson led the Red Hawks (22-4, 16-2 in Region X) with 20 points, while teammates Aniya Taylor and Milequa Eason also reached double figures in scoring with 15 and 10 points, respectively.

CVCC fell behind 24-8 after the first quarter, but outscored Cape Fear 22-17 during the second quarter to cut its deficit to just 41-30 at halftime.

The Red Hawks and Sea Devils (21-4, 16-3 in Region X) scored at will in the third quarter, combining to score 44 points, but CFCC extends its lead to 13 points entering the final quarter of play.

Cape Fear would go on to outscore the Red Hawks 19-10 during the fourth quarter to give CVCC just its fourth loss of the season and second in conference play.

Ayonna Cotten scored 22 points to lead the Sea Devils in the win — one of four CFCC players to reach double figures in scoring, including A'Terria Quick (20 points), Ny Langley (17 points) and Autum Morings (12 points).

The CVCC women's basketball team will attempt to start a new winning streak on Sunday when it faces Brunswick Community College in Bolivia, N.C. Tip off between the Red Hawks and Dolphins is set for 2 p.m.
