Red Hawks knock off 19th-ranked Sea Devils on the road

WILMINGTON, N.C. — The Catawba Valley Community College women's basketball team knocked off 19th-ranked Cape Fear 80-63 on the road Saturday afternoon at the Joe and Barbara Schwartz Center.

It was the second time this week that the Red Hawks (8-0, 3-0 in Region 10) had defeated a team who received votes in last week's National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) DII national rankings.

Alliyah Chaplin led CVCC in Saturday's win with a team-high 22 points — her third game this season with at least 20 points in a game. Ivy Eller added 19 points for Catawba Valley, which is her second-highest scoring output this season.

The Red Hawks came out with energy in Saturday's afternoon matinee, playing sound defense to take a 47-30 lead at halftime against Cape Fear (6-3, 6-2 in Region 10).

However, CVCC encountered foul trouble early in the second half, allowing the Sea Devils to regain momentum. Cape Fear would outscore Catawba Valley 21-15 during the fourth quarter, but the Red Hawks remained strong to capture the 17-point conference win.

Next up for CVCC is its final game of the 2019 calendar year — a road contest against Walters State (7-4) on Tuesday. Tip off in Morristown, Tenn. is set for 5:30 p.m.
