The Lady Red Hawks travelled through the North Carolina and Tennessee Mountains on Tuesday, September 30, 2014 to face Walter State Community College in a 6:00 match. After a tight 4-4 start to the first set of the match, the Catawba Valley Red Hawks took flight and went on a 21-4 scoring streak to win with a commanding 25-8 score. The WS Senators regained composure to put up a fight in the second and third sets, but sophomore hitters, Aimee Cloninger and Anna Henderson were unstoppable on the net as they led their team to 25-15 and 25-19 victories in the final two sets. Anna Henderson posted a season high 14 kills for the match followed by Aimee Cloninger with 13 kills. Rachel Anderson added 9 kills for the match and Tiffany Brooks contributed 4. Madison Pogue also beat a personal best in the contest, posting a season high 35 assists for the match. Libero Katelyn Houser had 22 digs, 4 assists, 3 aces and 2 kills against the Walter State Senators, proving to be a threat on multiple fronts. Also contributing defensively was Aimee Cloninger with 15 digs, Madison Pogue and Rachel Anderson with 12 digs each and Kristen Moore with 6 digs. Anna Henderson and Tiffany Brooks added 1.5 blocks each.
CVCC returns home this weekend, October 3rd & 4th for their invitational tournament with Spartanburg Methodist, Pasco Hernando State College, Northern Virginia and Walter State. Game play starts at 2:00 on Friday afternoon with a match between Northern Virginia and Catawba Valley. CVCC will face Walter State at 4:00 on Friday. On Saturday morning, the Red Hawks face District rival and nationally ranked #6 Pasco Hernando State College in the first match of the day at 10:00 before facing Spartanburg Methodist to close out the tournament at 2:00.
CVCC hosts Lenoir on October 10th for their annual "Dig Pink" event.
