DOBSON, N.C. — Powered by sophomore middle hitter Sabrina Pinard's 10 kills, the Catawba Valley Community College volleyball team pushed its win streak to 14 games with a 3-0 victory against Surry Community College on Tuesday.

Set scores were 25-19, 25-18 and 25-20.

Adair Melton and Leslie Leonard added eight and seven kills, respectively for CVCC which improves to 15-3 overall and 9-0 in conference matches. The Red Hawks also extend their winning streak in conference matches to 105 straight victories.

CVCC head volleyball coach Shannon Hudson was pleased with her team's play despite some obstacles it faced.

"We have several girls who are battling colds and sinus issues, and it showed on the court," Hudson said. "We played sluggish and were a little slow getting going. We made a lot more errors than we typically make, but I was proud of them for pulling it out and finishing."

Tuesday's win comes off the heels of the No. 17 Red Hawks' return to the NJCAA Div. II rankings. This is the second time this season that the CVCC volleyball team has been ranked.

"Our only three losses have come to the No. 2, No. 3 and No. 6 ranked teams (in Division II)," Hudson said. "We try not to put too much emphasis on (our ranking), but it's nice to have the recognition."

The Red Hawks return to action this Friday and Saturday for the Valley Invitational held at the Tarlton Complex in Hickory. Three volleyball teams in the NJCAA Division II rankings will be competing at the event, including top-ranked Owens (Ohio), No. 12 Pasco-Hernando (Fla). and No. 17 CVCC.

This is also the first time that CVCC volleyball program has ever hosted a No. 1 ranked team.

"It's going to be great competition," Hudson said of the Valley Invitational. "I told our girls that we've got to play a lot cleaner this weekend and step up our game a little bit. It'll be nice to have those teams come in. It'll push us and we can kind of see where we are moving to the end of the season."
