Red Hawks clinch sixth-straight regular season title

BOLIVIA, N.C. — The Catawba Valley Community College volleyball program clinched its sixth-straight Region X championship on Saturday with a 3-1 victory against Cape Fear at Brunswick Community College on Saturday.

The Red Hawks also finish their sixth-straight regular season unbeaten in conference play.

"I couldn't be prouder of the way our young team pulled together this season to continue our volleyball program's winning tradition," said CVCC head volleyball coach Shannon Hudson. "We battled through several injuries early on in the season, and the girls worked hard to overcome those obstacles as a team. The program's success is definitely a team effort, and I am blessed to work with such amazing coaches and administration."

Freshman Karsyn Mundy paced CVCC (25-8, 15-0) with 11 kills in the match, while sophomore Leslie Leonard added 10 kills and 3.5 blocks.

Defensively, Catawba Valley's Emily Williams tallied a team-best 22 digs and teammate Emilee Webber chipped in 16 digs and made a team-high 31 assists.

Saturday's win was the second in as many days for CVCC, which defeated Wake Tech Community College 3-0 in Raleigh on Friday afternoon behind seven kills apiece from Leonard and Sabrina Pinard.

The Red Hawks, who have won seven-straight matches, complete their regular season on Monday with a non-conference road contest against Montreal College.

CVCC opens Region X/District P tournament play Friday at 1 p.m. at Brunswick Community College against Guilford Tech. The semifinals and championship rounds of the tournament will also be held at Brunswick Community College on Saturday.

The winner of the tournament will represent Region X/District P in the National Junior College Athletic Association Div. II National Tournament in Charleston, W.Va. starting on Thursday, Nov. 16.
