BOLIVIA, N.C. — The Catawba Valley Community College volleyball team's 2017 season came to an end Saturday at the Region X/District P tournament held at Brunswick Community College.

The Red Hawks marched to the tournament final with a 3-0 victory against Lenoir in the semifinals, but were defeated in straight sets in the championship game against Pasco-Hernando State College (Fla.) — the eighth-ranked team in the nation.

The Red Hawks returned to the tournament finals by knocking off the Lancers in straight sets on Saturday morning.

Set scores were 25-9, 25-11 and 25-25.

Sophomore Mallory Bailey led CVCC (27-9) in the match with eight kills and four blocks.

Four Red Hawk players recorded at least six or more kills in the match, including Sabrina Pinard and Karsyn Mundy with seven kills each and Leslie Leonard with six kills.

Red Hawks setter Emilee Webber recorded 24 assists and added four kills and one ace — part of six aces on the day for CVCC. Kara Williams led Catawba Valley on serve with two aces in the match.

In a match up of top-15 teams in the nation, the Bobcats got the better of the Red Hawks in the district tournament finals — advancing to the National Junior College Athletic Association Div. II National Tournament.

Set scores were 25-15, 25-19 and 25-23.

Sophomores Sabrina Pinard and Leslie Leonard paced CVCC in the final match of their Red Hawk careers. Pinard drove down a team-high 11 kills and added two blocks, and Leonard added five kills and two blocks.

Mallory Bailey and Adair Melton added four kills apiece for Catawba Valley, and setter Emilee Webber posted 22 assists.

Following the match, Pinard and Bailey were named members of the all-tournament team.

The Red Hawks finish their 2017 season with a 28-9 record and were ranked 15th nationally at the conclusion of the regular season.
