Delcamp named NJCAA Defensive Player of the Week

HICKORY, N.C. — For the second time in four weeks, the Catawba Valley Community College volleyball program has received a weekly honor from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA).

Red Hawk freshman Rachel Delcamp was named the NJCAA D-II Defensive Player of the Week for games played Sept. 17-23 on Wednesday.

"I am very honored and humbled to be chosen out of all the talent in our division," Delcamp said.

Delcamp joins teammate Emily Williams as an NJCAA weekly award winner this season. Williams was honored for the week of Aug. 22 through Sept. 2.

A 5-foot-11 outside hitter from King, N.C., Delcamp tallied 28 kills, 10 aces, three block assists and 48 digs in 12 sets last week, helping the Red Hawks go 5-0, including wins against Bryant & Stratton, Wake Tech, Pitt and Surry community colleges and Louisburg College.

The former West Stokes High School standout also tallied a 0.257 hitting percentage from her six row outside position during the Region X-travaganza en route to earning all-tournament honors.

So far this season, Delcamp has a team-high 102 kills (2.04 per set) and 30 aces (0.60 per set) and her 138 digs (2.76 per set) rank second on the squad.

"Rachel had a phenomenal week of volleyball, and I'm so excited that she has been honored as the NJCAA Defensive Player of the Week," said Catawba Valley head volleyball coach Shannon Hudson. "Her offense is usually on display, but what makes Rachel such an invaluable asset on the court is that she has the defense to go with it. Her teammates have confidence in her to make the big plays on the court and her energetic and fun spirit is contagious and uplifting. It is a pleasure to be Rachel's coach, and I couldn't be happier for her success so far this season."
