Red Hawks go 2-1 on first day of Valley Invitational

HICKORY, N.C. — The Catawba Valley Community College volleyball team earned two wins in three matches during the first day of the 4th Annual Valley Invitational on Friday at the Tarlton Complex.

The Red Hawks (15-7) saw their nine-game winning streak snapped at the hands of Owens — ranked No. 2 in the nation in Division III — but CVCC rebounded with wins against St. Johns River State (Fla.) and D-I Wallace State in the nightcap.

The Express swept the Red Hawks, snapping a season-high nine-game win streak for the Catawba Valley Community College volleyball team.

Set scores were 19-25, 15-25 and 22-25.

Emma Clark led the way for CVCC with 10 kills and five blocks, while Sage Harrington added five kills and three blocks.

Defensively, sophomore libero Emily Williams made 16 digs and setters Macy Pope (13) and Emilee Webber (11) combined for 24 assists.

Behind a season-high 13 kills from freshman Meredith Patterson, the Red Hawks rebounded with a sweep against the Vikings.

Set scores were 25-23, 25-21 and 25-15.

Emma Clark and Sage Harrington added 11 and seven kills each, respectively, in the victory for CVCC.

Libero Emily Williams tallied a team-high 13 digs on defense, Macy Pope made 12 assists and 11 digs and Emilee Webber led the Red Hawks in assists with 14.



Catawba Valley 3, Wallace State 0

In a back-and-forth battle against the Lions, the Red Hawks came out with an impressive three-set victory against their Division I opponent.

Set scores were 25-21, 25-23 and 25-22.

Emma Clark led Catawba Valley with 11 kills and four blocks, while Sage Harrington and Siena Naotala added nine and seven kills each, respectively.

The Red Hawks made 14 blocks in the match, including four by Naotala, three by Harrington and two by Paige Sizemore.


The CVCC volleyball team returns to action on Saturday for the second and final day of the 4th Annual Valley Invitational.

Catawba Valley faces off with rival Pasco-Hernando (Fla.) at 10:30 a.m. before finishing play at its host event against South Florida at 3 p.m.
