KINSTON, N.C. — The top-seeded Catawba Valley Community College volleyball team advanced to the semifinals of the Region X/District O tournament on Friday with a 3-0 victory against eighth-seed Lenoir Community College.
Set scores were 25-14, 25-19 and 25-20.
Emma Clark paced the Red Hawks (31-9) with eight kills in the win, while Emilee Webber and Sage Harrington added seven kills apiece. Webber also had a team-leading 16 assists.
Defensively, Rachel Delcamp tallied a team-high 19 digs and Emily Williams added 11 digs.
After winning the first set, Catawba Valley trailed in both the second and third sets of Friday's quarterfinal match up against Lenoir — the host for the tournament — but found a way to come back in both sets to earn the three-set sweep.
CVCC trailed 12-11 in set two, but went on a 12-5 run late in the set to eventually win by six points to go ahead 2-0 in the match.
Down 10-6 in set three, the Red Hawks powered back behind Webber's serve, scoring 12-straight points to gain an 18-10 lead en route to the set and match win. Webber had a team-best four aces in Friday's victory.
The Red Hawks advance to face fourth-seeded Pitt (18-5) in the Region X/District O semifinals at 10 a.m. on Saturday in Kinston, N.C. The Bulldogs won a five-set thriller against Louisburg in the opening Region X/District O tournament match on Friday.
The winner of the Catawba Valley/Pitt match faces the winner of No. 2 Surry (20-4) and No. 3 Walters State (21-8) match in the District O championship match on Saturday afternoon. The winner of that championship contest will advance to the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) DII National tournament in Charleston, W.Va.
