Mark Wimberley enters his ninth season as an assistant coach with the Catawba Valley Community College volleyball program in 2019.

After coaching at the club level with success and playing in recreational leagues for many years, Wimberley brings a winning attitude and reinforcement to a team that already has a tradition of success.

Wimberley receives his AVCA Two-Year National Assistant Coach of the Year award. On top of his assistant duties, Wimberley serves as the Red Hawks recruiting coordinator. His first class of recruits at CVCC went undefeated their first two seasons. Building on those stellar seasons, the Red Hawks have not lost a conference game in seven years.

On Dec. 6, 2018, Wimberley was named the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) National Assistant Coach of the Year for Two-Year Colleges. Wimberley earned the honor after helping the Red Hawks achieve several accolades during the 2018 season, including three National Players of the Week, four All-Region Players, the 2018 Region Player of the Year, a freshman First-Team All-American and a ninth-place finish at National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) DII tournament in Charleston, W.Va.

Wimberley received this award from U.S. Women’s National Volleyball Team Head Coach and 3 time gold medalist Karch Kiraly at the 2018 Jostens Coaches Honors Luncheon in Minneapolis, Minn. on Thursday, Dec. 13, 2018 — part of the 2018 American Volleyball Coaches Association Convention.

Wimberley comes from a diverse background. After obtaining an associate’s degree in forestry from Wayne Community College, he was employed by the North Carolina Forest Service — retiring after 28 years of service.

Wimberley lives in Lincolnton with his wife of more than 30 years, Carla. They have two daughters — Marie and Cara — and one son, Joe. Wimberley is also a very proud grandfather to his family’s latest arrivals Brixton, Archer, Callie, Mabry and Nora.
